Depositons from Maryland Archives concerning the ownership of the tract of land called "Grassy Cabbin"

George Bruce aged fifty three being duly qualified on the part of William Sloan & others deposeth and saith that he has been acquainted with John Sloan and Mary about twenty years and in frequent conversation with both. They have acknowledged themselves man and wife; that some time in the year 1831 or 1832 John Sloan called on this deponant and stated that he wished him to come to his house to do some writing for him which he accordingly did do; that John Sloan stated to deponant that since the conveyance of his porperty by himself and wife to John J. Sloan that his wife had become dissatisfyed as he was in possession of all the notes for the purchase money fearing that he would do more for his children by his former wife than for the children by Mary his then wife but that he had no such intention, but to satisfy her he wished to assign one half the notes to her and give them into her possssion which he accordingly did. This deponent drew the assignment at the request of John Sloan there being twenty in number for one hundred dollars each and he assigned ten to his wife Mary, which said Mary a few [Page 44] days after the assignment left in the care of deponants wife for safe keeeping where they remained until after the death of Mary and John Sloan and were then delivered to John Sloans executor. This deponant after the request of John Sloan and Mary Sloan drew an article of agreement between the two wherein Mary Sloan relinquished her right of dower in any property John Sloan might be devised [?] of. This deponant knows the tract of land called "Grassy Cabbin" and knows it to be the same which John Sloan conveyed to John J. Sloan and that it is the same as escheated by Henry Brewer by the name of Part of Grassy Cabbin.
