Orville and Malla
Old Garlitz House where Orville and Malla raised their family.
Not only was there no insulation, but during winter storms snow would
blow through the cracks and the children would wake with snow covering
their blankets.
The women in the picture are sister in-law Ellie, mother in-law Elizabeth,
sister in-law Rose and Molly.
More on the Old House: I wish they would have kept the old
house. I remember it well. I remember stories of them
finding confederate money in the walls!? To get to the upstairs
there was a very narrow windy stairway, not much head room to get up there.
I thought it was great! Also I remember that there was a tiny room
downstairs where Grandma stayed. The bed was always made with one
of her quilts. She was TINY, always very soft spoken, as I remember.
The kitchen had a "dry sink" with a pump, the wood was that old time
blue. Also there were a couple springs. One wasn't used at all because
someone had drowned there. I remember that Grandma (Elizabeth McKenzie
Garlitz) was a good cook and just bustled around there getting the meal
on the table. from Joan McGowan Collins, daughter of Ellie
Orville and Malla on the porch of the house built on the Homestead
in Avilton.
This house was built after WW II and replaced the larger house which
sat higher up on the hill. (pictured above)
